6 Pillars of Profit:
# 3 – Position/Posture
Every business owner, whether owning a physical store or a business owner in the online space, has a posture and position.
POSTURE:
It is important to be a real business!
If you want to make some serious money, then you cannot look at your business as a side hobby, or a “whenever I want to work it – I work it!”
You have to have a certain mindset that says, “This is real and I am engaged, connected, involved, and committed to my new enterprise.” When your friends, family and customers see this attitude they are more likely to take you seriously at what you say and do. You don’t want to have them saying behind your back, “Ah yes, Walter’s got a new hobby he’s puttering around with. Give him 3 months and he’ll be on to something else!” NO, NO, NO!!
Being able to intelligently communicate what you do and are involved with is very important.
Having the right posture involves communicating your level of passion about your business “niche” to your customers and potential customers.
“Treat your business like a business!”
This means you show up, you engage with people, you talk to them about your business, your products and the opportunity they have to share in this with you.
Here is what my sponsor, George McBride, has to say about this:
“One day I came out to Walters farm (a few years back) when Walter was a fish farmer. I came out to see his business. A friend asked me to connect with Walter and so I did. So when I came out, Walter gave me a tour of the fish farm. He showed me all the ponds where they grow the fish, he showed me the hatchery where they put all the eggs to be hatched, and how those eggs hatched into fish fry. Then he showed me and told me about how the eggs are in the mouth of the mothers and how his workers had to go into the ponds and scoop the eggs out of their mouths.
I didn’t ask for any of this information! That’s just what he does! You come out to see his fish farm, he gives you a tour of the fish farm. He shows you everything that he’s doing.
That was his posture!
That was his business and that’s what he talks about.
And we need to be the same with our online business. It needs to be our posture.”
George goes on to say . . .
“Now if you are engaged in all this faithfully, and people ask, “What did you do today?” If you answer them honestly, you will be telling them about “X”, about “Y”, about your sales, and about the products that are available to be bought. And that is going to place you in a better POSITION with the lives of the people that you are involved in.”
It’s important that you are positioned in the area of your EXPERTISE.
If you don’t know about Stocks and Bonds, it is probably NOT a good idea for you to get invest in them. One of the first rules of investing is, “Invest in what you know.” You may get involved in some area of investing and there may be a problem, yet you cannot see it, even though it is right in front of your eyes. However, everyone who knows that market knows exactly what is wrong and they steer clear of it. There are some things that cannot be analyzed or seen simply by looking at charts, numbers and reports.
You need to be well positioned with the products that you are promoting and trying to get your clients to engage with.
You can’t just sell every product that comes across the table; a product that you have never used, bought, or engaged with. You want to sell products that you are familiar with so that you can give a testimonial to about its use, effectiveness, what your experience was with that ECA, that sales person, with that manufacturing company, in a way that is compelling to the person that is going to buy your product.”
I have talked before about the “Moral Authority” that you need to develop with your products and services. This is the authenticity that you bring to any product presentation or promotion. You cannot tell your potential client or customer that a product is “Awesome, best in the world, better than sliced bread and door knobs,” if you’ve not purchased the product yourself, tried it out, and know it’s good for them!
Finally, Position also has to do with being in the right place at the right time with the right product.
When your customer is ready to buy batteries, you don’t want to offer them soccer balls. If I have a hunger for a good steak, I really don’t want to consider a hamburger unless it is a better decision based upon my current financial status. In other words, people will, at times, adjust their “need or hunger” to a choice within their budget or pocketbook! You can offer your contacts a wider selection of products, more features, varying qualities, of comparative products that may interest them.
Position also has to do with offering products that you are able to control as well as controlling a certain percentage of the market. (Ex: the pricing, the shipping and delivery, the packaging, etc.) Sometimes as affiliates, we do not have this type of control or position since we are promoting products that are not ours, we don’t stock them, we don’t manufacture them – we just promote and sell them. And as newcomers, “newbies” in this arena, we do not control ANY percentage of the market!
Position is also being able to be on the cutting edge of a certain product that is new to any market. Those marketers that worked quickly to sell Drones when they first came out, have positioned themselves in the marketplace.
Remember when Hover Boards were just coming out?? The few visionary marketers that saw the potential of the market, have now made millions on this new creative technology. That’s being positioned and ready to respond to an upswing in any product market.
The key is for enterprising marketers, who want to be in a position to take advantage of new technology and enterprise, to keep their eyes open and be vigilant – and having their finger on the pulse of the buying market and ahead of the buying wave.
For me, I’m still thinking that Moon-boots and Yo-Yos will have a comeback and when they do – I’ll be ready. I am an expert moon walker and yo-yo-er!
